03Not a substitute for laboratory testing
Home screening tests do not replace laboratory testing carried out or arranged by a healthcare professional. A reactive (positive) screening result should always be confirmed through appropriate laboratory testing before any conclusion is drawn.
04Limitations and the window period
No screening test is 100% accurate. Both false positive and false negative results are possible. Antibodies take time to develop after exposure, so testing during the window period soon after a possible exposure may produce a non-reactive result even if infection is present. A non-reactive result does not completely rule out infection.
05When to seek professional care
Please contact a healthcare professional if you have a reactive result, have symptoms, have had a recent known exposure, or are unsure how to interpret your result. In the United Kingdom you can:
- Contact your GP or a local sexual health (GUM) service.
- Call NHS 111 for non-emergency medical advice.
06Emergencies
These tests are not for use in a medical emergency. If you are seriously unwell or need urgent help, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E department.
